Suggested November Reading Themes

November's a short month, but there are a few themes that are relevant to the season:

READING ELECTIONS- Vote for your favorite books and/or characters. To incorporate the concept of elections, you can have students give "campaign speeches" on behalf of their favorite candidates, hang  up posters, etc.

BOOKS I'M THANKFUL FOR- put up a display of a large cornucopia with books coming out of it; students may wish to write why they are thankful for a certain book- ie what lessons it taught them, what special meaning the book has for them.

Suggested December Reading Themes

December means holidays- many schools find it difficult to run a special reading program during December. It is generally harder to get parents involved during this busy time of year. If you are thinking of using a holiday theme, remember to be inclusive- not everyone celebrates Christmas or Chanukah. If you're concerned about this issue, consider perhaps a "WINTER WONDERLAND" theme. Of course, with the Millenium approaching, a Year 2000 reading theme is very appropriate. Many of the schools I am visiting this year are incorporating a "2000 Books In 2000" or similar theme.
Consider having a "Book Countdown to the Millenium" in December.
